Joe Mize - Significant Sig
Joe Mize, currently honored by his fraternity Sigma Chi as a "Significant Sig", is a developer of multiple retail concepts. Most notable of the concepts are: The Athlete's Foot, Sun Diego Boardshops and Mize Sport.
Mize developed the very first athletic sports shoe store in a regional mall in 1972 in Kansas City ,Kansas. The shoe interests in 155 stores were sold to a large French retailer in 1982. The next stage was as chairman and CEO of Catalina Capital, a retail consulting entity specializing in retail start ups and regional shopping center real estate.
Currently, Joe Mize is chairman emeritus of Sun Diego Boardshops, a southern California leader in the surf, skate and snow business.
Mize is a member of C.E.O. ( The Chief Executives' Organization ) which is the graduate program for former leaders of Y.P.O. ( Young Presidents' Organization ). While in Y.P.O. During his college years at the University of Kansas where, Mize graduated cum lade, he served as Treasurer of Sigma Chi, President of Alpha Kappa Psi, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and Omicron Delta Kappa. Additionally, Joe Mize was honored as a "Hilltopper" for university leadership and scholarship.
Active duty in the U.S. Navy included stints as Legal Officer and Supply Officer. After the Navy Mize studied at the University of California at Berkeley prior to returning to Missouri to turn around the family business which he then purchased as a leveraged buyout target.
A founder of Fairbanks Ranch Country Club and EXCEL (The Corporation for Excellence in Education ) Mize remains active in the Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center as a board member.
Joe Mize is married to Gayle Gillies and has two daughters Barbara, who resides in Denver with son and husband and Karie, a college professor in Oregon.
